Yes, there are certain natural ways to cure your heartburn. The question here is do they truly work as well as antacids and/or other heartburn medication? The answer is a positive yes, and if you opt to naturally cure your heartburn, you may not have to deal with another occurrence ever again.

Fact is antacids (and medications) are simply first aid treatments to cure your heartburn. In other words, both only work temporarily, as they merely neutralize the refluxed stomach acid. However, with prolonged and/or consistent use, antacids can be harmful to your health. Hence the warning labels stating “Do not take for more than two weeks”.

Surely, natural treatments are the best ways to cure your heartburn, as they work by restoring a healthy esophagus and lower esophageal sphincter. The following are some easy remedies to naturally treat acid reflux:

• Apples. When you feel an approaching attack in progress, you should eat a slice of an apple. One good idea is to slice an apple in the morning, then stick it in a Ziploc bag to go for the rest of the day.

• Avoid hard and crunchy food for the first 2-3 days of treatment. This will give you ample time to totally heal the esophagus and sphincter. It is also advisable to eat a spoonful of honey 3 times a day for these 3 days. Honey revitalizes tissue as it contains a naturally healing compound.

• Drink plenty of water. This will help keep the lower esophageal sphincter muscle flap tightly sealed over the stomach.

• Avoid eating too much. Eating more than necessary in one sitting tends to expand your stomach. Ideally, your meals should be the same size as your clutched fist.

It is also important to educate yourself on, at least, the basics of acid reflux to have a better understanding of the condition. This way, you will have much better chances to cure your heartburn.

Now, if you want to find out how you can get rid of your heartburn naturally, just click here now.

There are a few different types of conditions that have to do with the gastrointestinal system, but one of the most frequently diagnosed and frequently the most severe is GERD. Or gastro esophageal reflux disease is a disease that occurs when the stomach contents regurgitate back up into the esophagus, which in turn can cause inflammation and damage to the lining of the esophagus.

Heartburn is a common side product of this disorder. When this happens, severe pain is felt. For many, the daily pain and discomfort is very stressful and the pain can be so severe it is similar to having a heart attack. It creates a burning feeling in the upper chest area and at times it can also be felt in the throat. Some people with GERD experience a sharp pain as opposite to a burning sensation. Infrequently, people experiencing heartburn think they are having heart pain and this can be quite disturbing and traumatizing.

Sometimes symptoms of GERD heartburn occurs after a person has a meal. For some people, heartburn can be a problem they have to deal with for their entire lifetime. There is generally a time where it continually occurs or the intensity increases and this can happen for weeks or months before the attacks and the intensity dissipate.

This is a very severe situation, as the stomach contents that is regurgitated usually contains acid and pepsin that are produced by the stomach, when refluxed up into the esophagus can truly cause disadvantageous damage to the lining of the esophagus.

Heartburn Gerd symptoms of acid reflux include a burning feeling by the side of the esophagus as the liquid is being forced back up. Heartburn Gerd symptoms of acid reflux can also include a sour taste in your mouth; again as a result of the liquid coming back up.

Heartburn GERD symptoms acid reflux is usually the first noticed symptoms since they are so uncomfortable and painful. Heartburn GERD symptoms acid reflux can vary from being mild to so severe that they are actually unbearable, and some people with the condition can hardly even get out of bed sometimes because the pain is so bad.

Other factors that add to acid reflux and the common symptoms of GERD heartburn include the amount and the type of liquids that reflux from the stomach into the esophagus, the stomach not carrying out its duty normally while in the emptying process and the esophagus not clearing out properly. Occasionally the ring of muscle situated around the lower end of the esophagus does not open and close at the appropriate times or a person’s saliva is not properly neutralizing stomach acid. Additional common symptoms of GERD heartburn includes belching, temporarily loosing the ability to speak, a constant cough and difficulty in swallowing. Heartburn is usually not considered to be a serious condition, however for people who have continual heartburn or severe heartburn, health problems can occur.

Heartburn GERD symptoms acid reflux can be treated in quite a few ways. Most doctors suggest that first a patient try taking antacids, as these are very mild but may offer relief for your symptoms. If your condition persists or get more serious however, then you will have to think of more serious methods of treatment, such as changing your diet.

Antacids which are available off the shelve that are effective in neutralizing stomach acid and reducing the common symptoms of GERD heartburn. Nevertheless, antacids are not doing well at helping people who have severe heartburn. Ask your doctor about the group of drugs that act to avoid acid reflux from occurrence. Theses drugs work by increasing the rigidity on the barrier between your esophagus and stomach, while some are designed to progress the body’s capability of emptying out the stomach.

Medications are also accessible that helps to reduce the amount of stomach acid being produced. While you don’t get the quick assistance you can obtain with antacids this type of medication will stop or reduce acid reflux for several hours after taking the medication. If you experience the common symptoms of GERD heartburn it is a good that you consult with your doctor.

What foods will result an attack? For many people, spicy foods are a definite trigger that will end up in a hurting bout of this disorder. Citrus fruits can also be a culprit with this disorder and may need to be avoided. Foods with caffeine and alcoholic drinks are also known to cause discomfort. It can be a course of trial and error to discover which foods result in an attack.

Heartburn Gerd can be a severe problem not only that is painful but also one that has the possible to cause serious damage to a person. It is very important that a physician help a patient to find out the causes of their heartburn and treat it appropriately.

GERD is a chronic condition; signify that once you have experienced the onset you will usually be dealing with it for the rest of your life.

There is one thing that is certain. If you have acid reflux disease you will know it without much of a doubt. There are enough symptoms that will tell you there is something seriously wrong. Chances are the occasional heartburn does not qualify as acid reflux disease. This is just a little upset stomach that occurs only after you eat or drink certain things. Chronic heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux disease.

If you are a sufferer, the acid reflux disease symptoms you have may be:

1. Chronic Heartburn

2. Pain in the chest

3. Problems swallowing

4. Hoarseness, dental problems and asthma

5. Bringing food back up into the mouth

There are other minor symptoms that can be associated with acid reflux such as wearing tight pants. They can push on the stomach thereby making the acid in the stomach work its way into the upper stomach and right on up to the esophagus. This can happen especially after eating a heavy meal.

If you have acid reflux on a regular basis you probably have GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease). In essence, what happens is the stomach starts doing its job by digesting the food using acid and enzymes. This makes its way into the small intestine normally but if you have acid reflux, it goes into the esophagus instead. This causes swelling and damage to the esophagus.

There are many foods that cause this problem. Some are more prone to cause the problems of acid reflux. If you have noticed after you eat chocolate or drink a cup of coffee, you have exhibit acid reflux disease symptoms, then this is something that does not agree with your stomach and should be avoided.

Eating should be avoided several hours before retiring for the night. When you lie down with a stomach full of food, this is inviting acid reflux. The food starts to digest and the stomach acid starts building and when you lie down, suddenly you are in terrible pain and you feel as if you are going to vomit. Sitting up relieves it a little but not entirely. Once it has started, every time you swallow your chest feels as if it is on fire.

Sometimes we think that drinking milk will help the acid reflux. In some people it does, but in others it does not. This is because it goes into the stomach and mixes with the acid and all of a sudden you have sour milk as well as whatever else you have consumed. There are a few things that will help such as antacids, but they only help for a short time. Some people have reported when taking the mint flavored antacids they actually made the heartburn worse. This may be why antacid is not recommended for those suffering from heartburn that is a symptom of GERD.

Two more things that can worsen the symptoms of acid reflux are being overweight and being pregnant. This is due to the extra pressure on the abdomen. This in turn pushes on the stomach contents and into the esophagus they go. If you are suffering from frequent heartburn and have any or all of the acid reflux disease symptoms mentioned above you should seek the advice of your doctor.

1 Introduction

Multiple pregnancy poses particular problems for women, their infants, and for their caregivers. Women are likely to experience the common, unpleasant symptoms of pregnancy, such as heartburn, backache, hemorrhoids, difficulty walking, and tiredness to a greater degree than women with a singleton pregnancy. They are more likely to suffer from anemia, hypertension, pre-eclampsia, preterm labor, and operative delivery. The increased risks to the babies include congenital malformations, monochorionicity (both babies sharing one placenta), poor fetal growth, preterm birth, and perinatal death. For the survivors, in the long term there is a greater risk of cerebral palsy.

2 Prenatal care

A wide range of options for regular antenatal attendance are practised, ranging from modified shared care between obstetrician and general practitioner to weekly visits from the 20th week of gestation onwards. There is no evidence to suggest that one pattern of prenatal care is better than another, because this important research question has never been properly addressed. Regular prenatal visits permit screening for hypertension and pre-eclampsia by careful determination of blood pressure, and, if elevated, checking for proteinuria. Care for women with a multiple pregnancy who develop hypertension may be particularly important, and should follow current treatment recommendations.

2.1 Advice and support

Women with a multiple pregnancy need advice and support from caregivers to help them deal with the particular problems of multiple pregnancy and with the common, unpleasant symptoms of pregnancy, such as hemorrhoids, heartburn, and backache (see Chapter 13). They may be especially anxious about the pregnancy, the birth, and their ability to cope with the practical and financial demands of more than one new baby. Assisting women to find support, such as a special antenatal class for women with a multiple pregnancy or referring them to a multiple-birth support group, may help.

2.2 Nutrition

Fetal demands for iron and folate are increased in multiple pregnancy and anemia is reported more frequently than in singleton pregnancies. Routine iron and folate supplementation is often advised from the beginning of the second trimester, although this has not been shown to improve the clinical outcome of the pregnancy.

2.3 Ultrasound

If routine ultrasonography is not carried out, an ultrasound examination is indicated when multiple pregnancy is suspected. Routine early ultrasonography results in earlier detection of multiple pregnancies, the detection of mono-amniotic pregnancies (with greater risk), and the detection of some unsuspected congenital abnormalities. Earlier detection of multiple pregnancy has not been shown to improve fetal outcome.

The risk of neural tube defects, cardiac anomalies, and bowel atresias, have all been reported to be increased in twin pregnancies. Conjoined twins and twin reversed arterial perfusion sequence are rare anomalies that are found exclusively in multiple pregnancies. Early diagnosis of fetal anomaly enables appropriate counseling as to the care options available.

The prediction of amnionicity (number of amniotic sacs) and chorionicity (separate or joined placentas) by first-trimester ultrasound is possible, though its accuracy and the relevance to pregnancy outcome remains to be determined. In theory at least, knowledge of amnionicity and chorionicity may be helpful in a number of ways, such as in the differentiation of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome from a twin pregnancy complicated by intra-uterine growth restriction, in management after a single fetal death, or where one of the twins has a major congenital malformation and selective termination is considered.

If twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome develops, several therapeutic options have been advocated. These include: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, repeated therapeutic amniocenteses, and techniques that interrupt the pathological placental circulation. The results of controlled trials of these therapies are awaited, although there has been minimal evidence to date that any of these improve infant outcome.

Poor fetal growth of one or more babies is a risk in a multiple pregnancy. No adequately controlled data are available on the value of regular ultrasound or umbilical artery Doppler for assessing fetal growth and well-being in multiple pregnancy.

3 Preterm birth

Preterm birth presents the greatest threat to infant survival. Counseling as to the signs and symptoms of preterm labor with advice to present to the hospital if they occur, together with a written information sheet, may be of value, although this approach has not been subjected to a controlled evaluation.

Prediction of preterm birth is difficult. Cervical assessment by digital examination or by ultrasonography has been reported to provide useful prediction of the risk of preterm birth.

How frequent these assessments should be made is uncertain, and whether they are more beneficial than harmful is unknown.

Cervical fibronectin may prove to be useful in predicting which women will give birth preterm, although the main strength lies in its negative predictive value. Whether the measurement of fibronectin will be useful clinically to improve pregnancy outcome remains to be established by controlled trials.

Several prenatal treatments have been used in attempts to reduce the risk of preterm birth and its sequelae in women with multiple pregnancy. These include cervical cerclage, beta-mimetic agents, home uterine-activity monitoring, and hospitalization for bed rest. All have been evaluated by controlled trials but, to date, none have proven to be of value in reducing the risk of preterm birth.

3.1 Cervical cerclage

In normal pregnancy, the uterine cervix is thought to assume a sphincter-like function to retain the contents of the uterus. A congenital or traumatically-acquired weakness of the cervix, or the unusual physiological circumstance of multiple pregnancy, are factors that may render the cervix incapable of performing this function as efficiently as usual.

The data available from controlled trials of cervical cerclage in twin pregnancy are too few to be clinically useful. They are compatible with both a large beneficial effect and with a large adverse effect of the operation. Cervical cerclage does affect other aspects of clinical care and carries some specific risks. It should not be adopted specifically for twin pregnancy outside the context of further controlled trials of sufficient size and quality.

3.2 Prophylactic betamimetic agents

Trials have been conducted with a number of oral betamimetic agents, including isoxuprine, ritodrine, salbutamol, and terbutaline, in various doses, for the prevention of preterm labor in women with multiple pregnancy. In spite of the diversity of agents and the varying doses used, the results are consistent. No beneficial effect of prophylactic betamimetic administration has been detected on preterm birth, low birthweight, or perinatal mortality. Although prophylactic betamimetic agents have not succeeded in postponing delivery or in improving fetal growth, the four trials that provide information on the incidence of respiratory distress syndrome suggest that the frequency of this adverse outcome may be significantly reduced. No such effect has been found with prophylactic betamimetics in singleton pregnancies, and it might be a chance finding.

In the light of the theoretical dangers of chronic fetal exposure to betamimetic agents, prophylactic administration of these drugs should only be considered in the context of well-controlled clinical trials.

3.3 Home uterine-activity monitoring

Trials of home uterine-activity monitoring in multiple pregnancy have been small, and not enough detail is available to evaluate the potential sources of bias. There are suggestions that babies born to mothers using home uterine-activity monitoring for twin pregnancy may be less likely to weigh less than 1500 g, or to be admitted to a special care nursery. Because of the high potential for bias, these data must be viewed with caution. Home uterine-activity monitoring, if adopted at all, should not be adopted outside the context of adequately controlled trials.

3.4 Hospitalization in multiple pregnancy

Prolonged bed rest in multiple pregnancy, with the aim of increasing the duration of gestation, improving fetal growth, and decreasing perinatal mortality, has been advocated for many years. The general considerations about the use of bed rest (see Chapter 14), apply equally strongly to its use in multiple pregnancy, as the practice is not innocuous.

Hospitalization and bed-rest in multiple pregnancy was introduced into clinical practice without adequate evaluation and the policy has still not been fully evaluated. Only recently have a few trials been conducted and further controlled evaluations are necessary to clarify the effects of this intervention. More information is available from twin than from higher multiple pregnancies.

There is some suggestion from these trials that routine hospitalization of women with twin pregnancies may result in a decreased risk of maternal hypertension, but a positive impact on more relevant outcomes has been negligible. Indeed the data suggest that routine hospitalization may have adverse effects. The risk of very preterm birth (less than 34 weeks gestation) and very low-birthweight babies was increased by routine hospitalization in these trials. No differences have been detected in the incidence of depressed Apgar score, admission to special care nurseries, or perinatal mortality.

Some obstetricians have suggested that hospitalization for bed rest in twin pregnancies should be applied only for women deemed to be at higher than average risk of preterm birth. Although this more conservative advice is possibly justified, there is remarkably little good evidence to support it. Only one such selective policy has been evaluated in a randomized trial. Comparison between the hospitalized and control groups of women with early cervical dilatation failed to show any benefits on the risk of preterm birth, perinatal mortality, fetal growth, or other neonatal outcomes. There is no basis for widespread adoption of the policy.

Only one trial of bed-rest in triplet pregnancies has been published. The results of this trial suggest that a number of adverse outcomes, including preterm birth, perinatal death, and low birthweight, can be reduced by routine hospitalization of women with a triplet pregnancy. The trial was small; the findings were compatible with chance; and further research is required.

4 Delivery

Virtually no data from controlled trials are available to help determine the choice between vaginal birth and cesarean section for women with multiple pregnancy. A single trial has assessed the effect of cesarean section for delivery when the second twin was in a non-vertex presentation. As would be expected, maternal febrile morbidity and need for general anesthesia was increased with cesarean section. No offsetting advantages in terms of decreased fetal or neonatal morbidity or mortality were found.

5 Conclusions

Additional support may be needed to help women with the emotional, practical, and financial demands of pregnancy and planning for more than one baby.

Routine early ultrasonography results in early diagnosis, detection of fetal abnormalities, and can determine amnionicity and chorionicity. Whether this improves the outcome for the mother or infant is unknown. Regular antenatal attendance permits screening for hypertension. Iron or folate supplementation may help to prevent anemia.

Prediction of preterm birth is difficult and the role of cervical assessment and clinical use of fibronectin remains to be evaluated by controlled trials. Therapies that aim to reduce the risk of preterm birth have not been shown to be effective.

There is currently no sound evidence to support the practice of routine bed-rest in hospital for women with a twin pregnancy; indeed the evidence suggests that this may be harmful. Whether or not such a policy would be justified in women at higher risk of preterm labor, such as those with triplet pregnancy or with early cervical dilatation, remains to be established.

The use of cervical cerclage, oral betamimetics, or home uterine-monitoring, for women with multiple pregnancy cannot be justified outside the context of adequately controlled trials. The indications for cesarean delivery with multiple pregnancy have not been established.

In a pregnancy, there can be multiple gestations (for example, in the case of twins, or triplets). Human pregnancy is the most studied of all mammalian pregnancies.

Human pregnancy lasts approximately 9 months between the time of the last menstrual cycle and childbirth (38 weeks from fertilisation). The medical term for a pregnant woman is genetalian, just as the medical term for the potential baby is embryo (early weeks) and then fetus (until birth). A woman who is pregnant for the first time is known as a primigravida or gravida 1: a woman who has never been pregnant is known as a gravida 0; similarly, the terms para 0, para 1 and so on are used for the number of times a woman has given birth.

Medical and legal definitions

In many societies’ medical and legal definitions, human pregnancy is somewhat arbitrarily divided into three trimester periods, as a means to simplify reference to the different stages of fetal development The first trimester period carries the highest risk of miscarriage (natural death of embryo or fetus). During the second trimester the development of the fetus can start to be monitored and diagnosed. The third trimester marks the beginning of viability, which means the fetus might survive if an early birth occurs.

Everyone expects pregnancy to bring an expanding waistline. But many women are surprised by the other body changes that pop-up. The third trimester marks the beginning of viability, which means the fetus might survive if an early birth occurs.

Pregnancy planning

If you are planning to become pregnant, taking certain steps can help reduce risks to both you and your baby. Proper health before deciding to become pregnant is almost as important as maintaining a healthy body during pregnancy.

The first few weeks in utero are crucial in fetus development. However, many women do not realize they are pregnant until several weeks after conception. Planning ahead, and taking care of yourself before becoming pregnant, is the best thing you can do for you and your baby.

One of the most important steps in helping you prepare for a healthy pregnancy is a pre-pregnancy examination (often called preconception care) performed by your physician before you become pregnant.

A preconception visit includes assessments of a woman’s overall health and identification of potential risk factors that may complicate pregnancy. Women can receive advice and treatment for medical conditions suh as diabetes or heart disease that may be changed by pregnancy. By preparing in advance, you can be your healthiest before becoming pregnant.

A preconception examination may include any/all of the following:

Family medical history

an assessment of the maternal and paternal medical history, to determine if any family member has had any medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and/or mental retardation.

Genetic testing

an assessment of any possible genetic disorders, as several genetic disorders may be inherited, such as sickle cell anemia (a serious blood disorder that primarily occurs in African-Americans) or Tay-Sachs disease (a nerve breakdown disorder marked by progressive mental and physical retardation that primarily occurs in individuals of Eastern European Jewish origin). Some genetic disorders can be detected by blood tests before pregnancy.

Personal medical history

an assessment of the woman’s personal medical history to determine if there are any medical conditions that may require special care during pregnancy, such as epilepsy, diabetes, high blood pressure, anemia, and/or allergies; previous surgeries; past pregnancies, including the number, length of pregnancy (gestation), previous pregnancy complications, and pregnancy losses. http://www.myhealthidea.com

Vaccination status

an assessment of current vaccinations/inoculations to assess a woman’s immunity to rubella (German measles), in particular, since contracting this disease during pregnancy can cause miscarriage or birth defects. If a woman is not immune, a vaccine may be given at least three months before conception to provide immunity.

Infection screening

To determine if a woman has a sexually transmitted infection, urinary tract infection, or other infection that could be harmful to the fetus and to the mother. http://www.myhealthidea.com

Most people think of heartburn as a normal part of life – uncomfortable, but normal. Everyone they know gets heartburn at one time or another. They know the television ads by heart – the ones that show people thumping or rubbing their chests to indicate they have heartburn. Typically, people take an antacid and suffer until the burning sensation passes.

Heartburn symptoms are indeed common, but that is no reason to treat them too lightly. Heartburn symptoms do not happen by accident. They are a warning issued by your digestive system.

Heartburn symptoms must be considered in the context of their closely-related concerns: acid indigestion, acid reflux, acid regurgitation, non-cardiac chest pain, and sour stomach. Heartburn symptoms should also be considered in relation to GERD symptoms.

Heartburn symptoms closely resemble the symptoms of all the above, especially symptoms of acid.

Frequently-described Heartburn Symptoms

Heartburn symptoms are most frequently described as a burning sensation. Some may say they feel heat or warmth in the upper abdomen. Others describe heartburn symptoms as pain in the lower chest.

Heartburn symptoms occur behind the sternum – the central breastbone. The location, near the heart, is the reason for the name “heartburn,” but the heart is not involved. Some have described their heartburn symptoms as a feeling that the heart is on fire.

In addition to the burning pain, heartburn symptoms can include trouble swallowing, nausea, gas, and bloating.

Heartburn symptoms last as long as 2 hours for some. Some people have difficulty sleeping due to heartburn symptoms.

Why Heartburn Symptoms Need Attention

Heartburn symptoms, whether mild or serious, occasional or frequent, need attention. Let’s look at some of the reasons, beginning with one of the most serious.

1. Heartburn symptoms can feel much like heart attack symptoms. If you have heart disease, or are at risk for heart disease, seek medical attention immediately, even though you believe it may be heartburn. It is not worth risking serious or fatal results.

2. Heartburn symptoms, if frequent, can lead to serious medical concerns such as cancer of the esophagus. The acid that washes back into the esophagus can damage the sensitive linings of the esophagus, and lead to GERD. As it worsens, cancer can develop.

3. Heartburn symptoms are not isolated pain. They occur because something is not right in your digestive system. Heartburn symptoms are warnings. Just as you should not ignore warning lights on you car’s dashboard, you should not ignore the warning provided by heartburn symptoms.

Cause of Heartburn Symptoms

Heartburn symptoms are caused by a malfunction of the sphincter muscle at the bottom of the esophagus. This ring of muscle, the lower esophageal sphincter, is known in shorthand as the LES.

The first job of the LES is to open so that swallowed food can enter the stomach. Its second job is to close quickly to keep stomach food and juices from washing back into the esophagus.

When the LES is weakened, pressured, or relaxes inappropriately, it malfunctions. Stomach juices, and even bits of food, reflux (wash back) into the esophagus. Since the linings of the esophagus are not meant to handle the strong stomach acids, the nerves react with a sensation of burning.

Listen to Heartburn Symptoms

Since heartburn symptoms are the result of a malfunctioning LES, it makes sense to learn why the muscle is malfunctioning.

1.

People of all ages suffer from acid reflux disease. This is a serious but common condition that is caused when the acid made in your stomach to digest food is forced up into the esophagus. The symptom of acid reflux that is most common is heartburn, the sensation that your chest is burning. Heartburn can be quite painful and can sometimes be felt in the areas of the neck and throat as well. Many emergency room visits are attributed to heartburn because it can become so painful that people think they are having a heart attack.

Acid reflux heartburn can be brought on by some foods and these should be avoided. Not every acid reflux food to avoid will cause heartburn in every person, however, but until you determine which foods cause your heartburn, you should probably keep these in mind when you plan your meals.

The most common acid reflux foods to avoid are spicy foods. Spicy foods seem to cause the most pain for someone with chronic acid reflux. This could be because the lining of the esophagus can break down and ulcers can form as a result of the acid. Avoid foods that use hot peppers or chili peppers, such as Chinese and Mexican foods. Hot chicken wings or buffalo chicken can contribute to painful heartburn as well.

Fatty and fried foods are also common acid reflux foods to avoid. Fatty meats such as marbled and ground beef can cause heartburn. The fatty parts of chicken include the dark meat and wings. Fried foods like fries and onion rings should be avoided as well. Onions should really be stayed away from in all forms.

Citrus and acidic fruits are more acid reflux food to avoid. Tomatoes and tomato products like salsa and spaghetti sauce should be avoided because of the high acid content in tomatoes. Citrus fruits like grapefruits and oranges, as well as their juices, can cause symptoms of acid reflux, too.

Some people complain of heartburn from some dairy foods. Acid reflux foods to avoid in the dairy category whole milk and milk shakes, fatty cheeses and whole cottage cheese, sour cream and ice cream.

Some snacks can cause symptoms of acid reflux disease. These acid reflux foods to avoid include chips, chocolate, buttery cookies and brownies, peppermint and spearmint. There are a few beverages to steer clear of as well. These are caffeinated and alcoholic beverages.

These common acid reflux foods to avoid are not going to cause heartburn in every person. Some people will have problems with some of these foods and others will get heartburn with different foods. Keeping a diary of when you get heartburn and the foods you had just prior to the symptoms is the best way to personalize your list of acid reflux food to avoid. Before long you will be able to figure out which foods to stay away from. There is no cure for acid reflux disease, but the symptoms can be controlled with a proper diet.

Acid reflux, also known as gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs when the sphincter that is positioned at the bottom of the esophagus stops functioning properly. This will allow food in the stomach to come back up through the sphincter into the esophagus and sometimes even into the mouth, resulting in a painful heartburn (a burning sensation in the chest and throat) or even permanent damage to the esophagus if no proper acid reflux treatment is sought.

Acid reflux treatment varies among individual upon diagnosis. To some, lifestyle changes will be necessary to reduce the pain and discomfort of the disease. One such change is to avoid foods that trigger the symptoms. Foods that give rise to Acid Reflux are aplenty and obtaining a list of them is a good place to start. Yet, a food that cause problem for one may be perfectly fine for another. Therefore, patients are regularly advised to keep their own diet diary, so that offensive foods can be identified and avoided.

Those diagnosed with Acid Reflux should also avoid overeating, alcohol, coffee and smoking. A person who is obese may be advised to loss some weight as part of an acid reflux treatment plan. Since symptoms can get worse after a night of lying flat, one might find relief in the morning by elevating the upper body by about eight inches during sleep.

Acid Reflux Drugs Are Very Effective

If lifestyle changes are not able to provide the desired relief, one can then consider taking Acid Reflux drugs. Sometimes readily available antacids will do. In other cases, a prescription drug might be required. A point to note is that this form of treatment will have to be taken regularly and continued indefinitely

The good news is that the treatment is not difficult to administer for acid reflux in adults and children. It is rather excellent and extremely fast in relieving most, if not all of the symptoms of the person suffering for quite some time.

Are The Acid Reflux Drugs Good Or Bad To Treat The Acid Reflux

The acid reflux drugs are highly capable of getting rid of all the symptoms within a day or two from the start of the treatment. They will be free of chest pain, heartburn, and etc. These treatments are simple and direct which include one of two main acid reflux drugs.

If you do not like too many drugs, you can consider using herbs and other alternatives which can be just as effectively.

Understanding Acid Reflux Surgery

For those who do not wish to continue with medication forever or the medication is ineffective, they can consider surgery.

It is important to understand the surgical process and the complications involved if you are considering it as an option for your suffering. This is a grave matter that deserves serious consideration in terms of your options. Unless all your natural options are unsuccessful and you cannot find effective relief in either a dietary or a lifestyle change, then you can consider surgery as a solution for your recovery. You will thus have to consider the plus and minus of the surgery before deciding.

The Surgical Procedure

One procedural option for acid reflux surgery is called laparoscopy. This is a technique that is similar to tying the Fallopian tubes in females. The same principle applies and the surgeon would fold the upper stomach. It is wrapped and sutured to the esophagus from this point, wrapped around both sides of the food tube. This technique aims to restore the typical amount of pressure on the sphincter and, thus, creates a normal operation procedure that allows the correct quantity of acid to flow to the right places.

An alternative to the surgical procedure is to reduce the amount of stomach acid through medication. This is preferred to acid reflux surgery only if the surgery is deemed too dangerous for the patient or if it is not thought to work with the patient’s biochemical reactions.

The choice of treatment lies with the individual whether surgical or non-surgical procedure is used to eliminate the pervasive problem of acid reflux.

The Cure And The Suffering

The cure for acid reflux actually lies in your hands. It is not about the medicine, drugs and surgery available to cure Acid Reflux. It is about having the right diet to combat the symptoms. For someone suffering from acute acidity and acid reflux, their diet should be specially designed and they should make sure that they are never caught hungry.

People who skip breakfast or spend two hours eating lunch/dinner would never get their health back. When the stomach stays hungry for prolong period, a lot of acid is created, and it is possible for the stomach to ‘fight back’ and force it up towards the mouth. This is when you get a sour taste in the mouth.

Visit a doctor if you suspect that you are suffering from acidity. If treatment is delayed, the danger of getting esophageal ulcers will be greater. This might lead to cancer at a later stage. Always remember, “Prevention is always better than cure.”

Basic Symptoms of Acid Reflux

In Grownups

Heartburn and regurgitation are the most typical symptoms of acidic reflux in adults. Other symptoms could include chest pain, increased salivation, sore throat and trouble in swallowing. GERD, the chronic condition of acidic reflux can injure the oesophagus manifested in such diseases as esophagitis where the oesophagus lining is damaged and oesophageal strictures where the inflammation stimulated by relentless acid reflux constricts the oesophagus. The oesophageal injury shows up extra symptoms like frequent throat clearing leading to hoarseness, coughing, sinusitis, asthma attack and dental erosion.

The burning sensation or heartburn, the basic acid reflux symptom, happens mostly at nighttime for most of the patients suffering from this illness. The condition of heartburn follows after a heavy meal or during such activities as lying on the back, bending over and lifting. Heartburn however does not necessarily mean damage to the esophagus. Dyspepsia is common among heartburn patients manifesting in the shape of stomach fullness, upper abdominal pain and revulsion after food. Regurgitation causes the food to come to the mouth or vomiting.

In Children

Sometimes the babies are found crying inconsolably when they are laid down. GERD could be the cause of the discomfort that causes them to cry or wake up from sleep. Acid reflux in infantsshow symptoms akin to adults like coughing, revulsion and breathing problems though the illness is often more tough to detect than in adults. Once afflicted with GERD, the child loses appetite, does not put on weight, becomes irritable and suffers from constant crying, bad breath and burping. In this condition, the colon movements of the babies are affected causing them suffer either from trots or frequent loose stool. For some, the symptoms persist even after the babies are ready to sit or stand.

Not So Common Symptoms

A sensation that food is stuck in the chest causing discomfort is an example of the less common indicators. Breathing problems and laryngitis are other less common symptoms.

James Mwangi – Acid Reflux Articles.
