    Acid reflux, heartburn or GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease) affects millions of people worldwide which has given rise to a massive industry of short term medication to relieve the symptoms of this condition. This however is rather short term and people start to rely on these things instead of fixing some of the problems within their own life that causes their heartburn. While there are many things that cause heartburn your diet is major factor in all this and there are some foods to avoid with acid reflux and some that you should have more of that lessen the pain and frequency of this condition.

    Foods to avoid

    Foods that cause high acid production should be kept out of ones diet as much as possible. The longer a food stays in the stomach the fuller it will be which leads to the acid rising into the esophagus. Highly fatty foods are some of the worst problems but here is a concise list of some real problem foods.

    * Orange juice

    * Lemons and lemonade

    * Raw Onions

    * Fried food of any kind

    * Ice cream

    * Alcohol to excess

    * Chips

    * Chocolate

    * Any fatty fast food

    While there are many more foods these are reported as some of the worst. Recent research has proved that caffeine which was once thought not be a problem actually has no real effect on acid reflux.

    Foods to have

    There are also some foods that people suffering from chronic heartburn are encouraged to eat more of as they are digested quickly and do not cause excess acid production.

    * Apples

    * Broccoli

    * Carrots

    * Beans

    * Fish

    * Skinless chicken breast

    * Egg whites

    * Bran

    * Anything fat free

    Excess fat is one of the main problems with acid reflux so lean meat, fat free dairy foods and many other things are highly important but also watch the sugar content is not too high also for you own health.

    Foods to avoid with acid reflux and foods to eat more of are just one part of controlling heartburn however. The amount you eat in one sitting is more important however as having a full stomach aggravates the condition more than what food you have. Try to eat more meals but in smaller quantities as an additional precaution.
